Technical Lead - Business Systems Development

Rewards package: SO2, access to Government Pension Scheme and 30 days annual leave

Key Responsibility: Overseeing a small team of developers responsible or database admin, development using Microsoft stack, support and maintenance of core business applications, support and maintenance of the B&FC web presence.

Principal Duties:

1. Hands on supervision of a busy team of developers and DBA's, ensuring that projects are delivered to schedule and BAU support is conducted in line with SLA's

2. Ensuring the availability and integrity of core business systems

3. Ensuring regular proactive maintenance of the databases that underpin core B&FC business system is performed

4. Operational duties

5. To supervise the software development team

6. To ensure that regular maintenance of the databases is carried out in a controlled fashion

7. To ensure that changes to core business systems are carried out in a controlled fashion

8. To ensure that incidents relating to core business systems are resolved within SLA targets, escalating with vendors where appropriate

9. To schedule and implement upgrades and enhancements of business systems in line with the B&FC strategy

10. To replace legacy applications with modern solutuiolns on a variety of platforms including Dynamics 365, and the common data service

11. To support the use of and contribute to the maintenance of Oracle RDBS applications and tool sets

12. To support the use and contribute to the development of Microsoft SQL Server applications, Microsoft reporting services and power BI

13. To ensure effective communication with all affected parties throughout the life cycle of an incident, problem, change or project

14. To improve operational processes and implement automation wherever possible

15. To provide a DBA resource to other it service teams

16. Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of IT technology innovation and development tools

17. To provide occasional out of hours support during system maintenance outage windows

18. To provide AD HOC and scheduled reports as required

19. To provide 3rd line support for business systems to ensure continuing operational service

4. To provide resource and assist other IT teams to deliver their strategic goals

1. Identify and report on own development plans and training opportunities where possible. Contribute to own development through the staff performance review systems and regular one to one meetings

2. Actively contribute ti the development and improvement of the IT service by researching appropriate new technology and contributing to the service improvement plans

3. Identify and report improvements to processes and procedures within our own team

4. To be responsible for identifying own training needs

Personal Attributes

Qualifications - 

Qualified to Degree level in IT, Computer Science or related discipline or equivalent experience - Essential

ITIL Certified - Desirable

Appropriate technical qualifications (Microsoft certification or similar) - Desirable

Experience -

Experience of supervising a team - Desirable

3 years experience of administering and supporting databases (MS SQL/Oracle) - Desirable

Incident Management experience - Managing IT incidents including business expectations and communication - Essential

Experience of working in the Further/Higher education sector - Desirable

Experience with education specific software solutions, such as Tribal EBS - Desirable

Proven experience in developing fit-for-purpose software solutions - Essential

Proven track record of designing and building complex IT solutions using the Microsoft technology stack - Essential

Proven experience in implementing interfaces between various systems using APIs and web services - Desirable

Experience using an IT service management platform - Essential

Experience with cloud based technology such as O365, D365 and Azure - Desirable

Proven experience of working with an outsourced, ideally offshore, development resource - Desirable

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Excellent communication skills, telephone manner and personal presentation - Essential

Excellent organisational skills - Essential

Knowledge of SQL query tools: inc SQL, PL/SQL - Essential

Knowledge and understanding of Agile Scum - Desirable

Strong, in-depth knowledge of development tools including CSS, HTML and the Microsoft technology stack - Desirable

Knowledge of Data warehousing solutions and Microsoft Power BI- Desirable

Knowledge of SQL server Analysis Services (SSAS) and tabular models - Desirable

Knowledge of Financial and HR systems and related process - Desirable
