As a global ecommerce organization with millions of customers and thousands of employees in multiple countries, Groupon presents exciting challenges for our Legal department to tackle. The Legal team is a global function that handles the commercial, regulatory, employment, IP, risk, and fraud matters at Groupon. We collaborate and work cross-functionally across all business channels including product, marketing, Groupon Goods, information security, corporate development, and more.
The Intellectual Property Counsel will advise Groupon’s EMEA and global business on all aspects of the company’s brand protection and enforcement strategy, related IP issues, and associated risks. This person will collaborate and work cross-functionally across the legal department and across all business channels, including product, marketing, Groupon Goods, information security, corporate development, and other departments. You’ll spend time on the following:
Primary responsibility for all aspects of trademark clearance, selection, filing, registration and maintenance, including day-to-day management of an existing portfolio
Oversee the management and processing of all third-party IP claims, prior to litigation, for EMEA
Primary responsibility for reviewing all television, online, and print advertising for EMEA for IP risk
Refine and implement company policies and processes around vetting third-party goods for authenticity for our Groupon Goods channel
Counsel all business vertical, marketing, product, and engineering teams on use of third-party IP
Manage and partner with outside counsel to maintain highest levels of service
Think critically and creatively while being a trusted adviser to the business, to the Managing Counsel, Global IP, and the General :
We’re excited about you if you have :
JD with an active bar membership
3-5+ years experience at a reputable law firm and/or corporate legal department
Extensive hands-on experience advising clients on brand protection and enforcement strategies
Experience handling third-party IP claims through successful resolution and implementing appropriate anti-counterfeiting controls
Experience with relevant online, print and broadcast IP issues
We are looking for someone that is both self-directed and highly collaborative; that can lead projects independently while effectively working with colleagues in legal and other stakeholders in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
This person should possess good judgment and the necessary business acumen to identify and assess risk in the context of the organization’s goals and help develop creative, business-oriented solutions to complex legal issues
Should be able to work on multiple matters at once, and to execute work quickly, efficiently and with excellence while meeting deadlines under pressure
Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate legal matters effectively at all levels and across the organization
