Groupon’s mission is to become the daily habit in local commerce and fulfill our purpose of building strong communities through thriving small businesses by connecting people to a vibrant, global marketplace for local services, experiences and goods. In the process, we’re positively impacting the lives of millions of customers and merchants globally. Even with thousands of employees spread across multiple continents, we still maintain a culture that inspires innovation, rewards risk-taking and celebrates success. If you want to take more ownership of your career, then you're ready to be part of Groupon.
We have dynamic growth and little room for error, so data plays an integral role in our decision-making process. As we navigate the uncharted waters of local e-commerce, we continue to form new iterations of how we operate as a business. The Data Engineer will be responsible for expanding and optimizing our data and data pipeline architecture, as well as optimizing data flow and collection for cross functional teams. The ideal candidate is an experienced data pipeline builder and data wrangler who enjoys optimizing data systems and building them from the ground up.
We're a "best of both worlds" kind of company. We're big enough to have resources and scale, but small enough that a single person has a surprising amount of autonomy and can make a meaningful impact. We're curious, fun, a little intense, and kind of obsessed with helping local businesses thrive. Does that sound like a compelling place to work?
You’ll spend time on the following:
You will create and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture.
You will assemble large, complex data sets that meet the functional business requirements.
You will identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
You will build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL and Hive.
Business partnering: you’ll be the main contact between the Analytics team and Product, Data and Design teams to escalate any data-related issues and ensure that their data infrastructure needs are met.
We’re excited about you if you have:
4+ years of experience in a Data Engineer role, who has attained a Graduate degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Informatics, Information Systems or another quantitative field.
Advanced working SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases; AWS knowledge is a +
Experience building and optimizing ‘big data’ data pipelines, architectures and data sets.
Experience performing root cause analysis on data and processes to answer specific business questions and identify opportunities for improvement.
Strong analytic skills related to working with unstructured datasets.
Build processes supporting data transformation, data structures and workload management.
A successful history of manipulating, processing and extracting value from large disconnected datasets and leading data migrations.
Strong project management and organizational skills.
Experience supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a fast-paced environment.
