The producer role involves putting together the content of these events; it's not concerned with the logistical side - the venue, the catering, the staging, etc. What will make or break a conference is the quality of the speakers: the producer's job is largely to identify and sign up the best, the most appropriate, the highest profile speakers for their event. Thus producers must have the ability to research a market intensively, the persistence to get through to the people he/she wants as speakers, the communication skills to explain the subject of the conference and the persuasiveness necessary to make sure they're on board.
